Reactions following childhood vaccination

Minor reactions to vaccination are common and are regarded as a sign that the child's immune system is reacting positively to the vaccine. Serious major reactions are extremely rare.

Minor side-effects include transient tenderness, redness and swelling at the injection site. Other general adverse reactions include:

  • Crying
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Fatigue/ lack of energy
  • Rash

Dr John Fleetwood, Family G.P. says:
“Minor reactions to childhood vaccinations are very common and are regarded as a sign that the child's immune system is reacting positively to the vaccine.
These reactions often include tenderness and swelling at the site of injection, raised temperature, reddening of the skin, rash and irritability.
It has been shown that children are less likely to have the side effects of pain, raised temperature and irritability after vaccination if given liquid paracetamol, you can choose to use Ibuprofen after 3 months”
