Lowering a high temperature
If your child has a temperature, it is important to try and bring the fever down to make them feel more comfortable and to prevent the temperature from getting higher. Below are some tips on how to reduce your baby's temperature:
- Keep the room cool by opening the windows or turning down the heating.
- Try using a fan to cool the room, but don't place it directly at your child
- Remove a layer of clothing or let older children lie naked under a cotton sheet but ensure your child doesn't get cold
- A feverish child should also be encouraged to drink plenty of fluids
If the temperature remains the same, repeat everything again in a couple of hours.
If the second bout of nursing still does not reduce the temperature, ring your doctor.
An effective way of bringing down a high temperature is to give an antipyretic medicine, that is one that reduces a fever, like liquid paracetamol, (e.g. Calpol ®). This can be given to infants from 2 months.
